South Sound flamenco is gaining rhythm, with semi-regular gigs everywhere from Tacoma’s New Frontier Lounge to Olympia’s La Gitana pizzeria. If you’re a fan of the flurried footsteps and fluttering fan, you’ll have a chance this weekend to learn a little flamenco for free at the Gig Harbor Library.
The class is courtesy of Tacoma flamenco dancer Marisela Fleites-Lear, the Cuban-born dancer and director of Tacoma Flamenca company.
Fleites-Lear has danced flamenco for 25 years in Cuba, Spain and the United States, collaborating with artists like Teo Morca and teaching in Tacoma and Olympia. (She also teaches Latin American literature at Green River Community College.)
Fleites-Lear will give students an appreciation of the intricacies of the art form and an introduction to basic steps. Wear comfortable clothing and hard-soled shoes. Children must attend with a participating adult. Space is limited, registration is necessary.
The free class runs from 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday at Gig Harbor Library, 4424 Point Fosdick Drive W., Gig Harbor.
