Tacoma kids have a new goal to aim for.
The Tacoma School Board Thursday officially raised the bar for expected graduation rates. Board members said they want the district’s overall graduation rate to hit 85 percent by the year 2020.
The most recent graduating class of 2012 achieved only a 68-percent graduation rate, according to district calculations. But that represents about a 6-percent increase from the previous year.
District officials have said they are confident they can keep the positive momentum going.
In addition to setting 85 percent as the target for on-time graduation, the board also wants to see a 90-percent extended graduation rate for students who take an extra year to complete their high school credits.debbie.cafazzo@ thenewstribune.com
