A man was in custody and a woman was still at large after a stolen wallet led to a multi-jurisdictional search near Black Lake on Friday.

Olympia police were called to 24 Hour Fitness, 621 Black Lake Blvd. SW, before 10 a.m. for reports of a stolen wallet, said spokeswoman Laura Wohl.

Witnesses saw a man and a woman leave in a car. Police followed the vehicle and eventually pulled the driver over on Black Lake Boulevard.

As police approached the car, the driver started up again and crashed the car, Wohl said.

The pair took off on foot, launching a search involving the Olympia Police Department, Lacey Police Department and Thurston County Sheriff’s Office. Two police dog search teams were used.

A perimeter was set up in the area of Goldsby Street Southwest and Black Lake Boulevard Southwest. One of the K-9 units eventually found the man hiding in a shed off Goldsby Street, Wohl said.

The man and the woman are believed to be involved in other thefts.

“These folks are wanted in several similar crimes if they turn out to be who we think they are,” Wohl said.

The woman was still at large as of Friday afternoon.
