Tech expert Alben to talk analog vs. digital in Richland

RICHLAND -- Technology expert Alex Alben will discuss how technology is shaping communication, politics and media at 7 p.m. Thursday at Washington State University Tri-Cities, 2710 Crimson Way, Richland.

Alben is the author of Analog Days: How Technology Rewrote Our Future. He will talk about the "analog" and "digital" cultures in the United States, and whether the analog culture can survive in a digital age.

  • One Boston bombing suspect dead; search continues for second

    BOSTON — One of the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings was killed early Friday morning after leading police on a wild chase following the fatal shooting of a campus police officer, while the other was sought in a massive manhunt that shut down large parts of the area. Gov. Deval Patrick of Massachusetts said residents of Boston and its neighboring communities should “stay indoors, with their doors locked.”

    The two suspects were identified by law enforcement officials as brothers from Chechnya. The surviving suspect was identified as Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, of Cambridge, Mass., a law enforcement official said. The one who was killed was identified as his brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26. Authorities were investigating whether the dead man had a homemade bomb strapped to his body when he was killed, two law enforcement officials said.

    RICHLAND -- The Richland School District is holding a districtwide information night.

    All parents and community members are invited.

    The event is from 5 to 8 p.m. Jan. 23 at Richland High School, 930 Long Ave.

    RICHLAND -- An information session on the Richland School District's Three Rivers HomeLink alternative school will be Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

    The presentation will review the school's offerings, particularly it's science, technology, engineering, art and math, or STEAM, program.

  • Digital Bookmobile tour in Richland Wednesday

    The Digital Bookmobile National Tour will stop Wednesday at the Richland Public Library, showcasing the local library’s free eBook download service. The event runs from noon to 6 p.m.

  • Digital newstand service available at libraries

    Patrons of the Mid-Columbia Libraries and Richland Public Library now have access to dozens of popular magazines through their new digital newstand service Zinio.

    The magazines can be downloaded to a number of internet-enabled devices, from Kindles to iPads to desktop computers. There is no wait list to view the magazines and no holds, and the service does not cost patrons anything to use.

    One hundred titles are available to Mid-Columbia Libraries patrons while 94 magazines will be available through the Richland Public Library.
