A fire broke out overnight at a Covington business, and investigators are trying to determine what started it.

A passerby reported a possible structure fire in the 27500 block of Covington Way Southeast around 1:40 a.m. The witness wasn’t sure exactly what was burning because the property was fenced off.

“When firefighters from Kent and Maple Valley arrived, they found a large metal canopy with a fire burning under it made up of peat moss and possibly other materials,” Capt. Kyle Ohashi of the Kent Fire Department said in a news release.

“Firefighters knocked down the fire and kept it from spreading to nearby machinery or other packaged organic materials,” Ohashi added.

According to fire officials, the business specializes in both organic and inorganic “growing media” for the production of horticultural-industry plants.

The fire is under investigation at this time but does not appear to be suspicious, Ohashi said.
