Jenn Suhr (Fredonia, N.Y.) set the indoor pole vault world record as she cleared 5.02 meters/16-5.50 feet to capture the 2013 USA Indoor Track & Field Championships title on March 2 in Albuquerque, N.M. Meanwhile, Will Leer (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Mary Cain (Bronxville, N.Y.) claimed the men's and women's 1,600-meter titles, and Ryan Whiting (Harrisburg, Pa.) won the men's shot put.
CLEAN SWEEP
Josh Farris (Renton, Wash.) posted a score of 228.32 to headline Team USA's podium sweep at the 2013 World Junior Figure Skating Championships on March 2 in Milan. Joining Farris on the podium were Jason Brown (Highland Park, Ill.) and Shotaro Omori (La Mirada, Calif.), who claimed silver and bronze. Samantha Cesario (Oceanside, N.Y.) was the top U.S. female finisher in fourth place, while Haven Denney (Ocala, Fla.) and Brandon Frazier (Tampa, Fla.) won their first world junior pairs title.
BIATHLON
Tim Burke (Paul Smiths, N.Y.) led Team USA at the world cup event on March 2-3 in Oslo, Norway, placing fourth in the 15-kilometer mass start and a 15th in the 12.5K pursuit. Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.) finished 27th in the mass start and 34th in the pursuit.
CYCLING
Dominique Daniels (Gilbert, Ariz.) defended her 2012 collegiate BMX national championship on March 2 at the Black Mountain BMX track in Phoenix. Representing Marian University, Justin Posey (Winston Salem, N.C.) held off a pair of riders from Lindsey Wilson College to win the national title and lead the Knights to the team championship.
EQUESTRIAN
Kent Farrington (Chicago, Ill.) and Blue Angel won and Beezie Madden (Cazenovia, N.Y.) and Cortes 'C' finished second at the $150,000 CSIO 4* Wellington Grand Prix on March 3 in Wellington, Fla. Earlier in the week, Farrington and Madden teamed with Reed Kessler (Armonk, N.Y.) and Laura Kraut (Oconomowoc, Wis.) to win the FEI Nations Cup on March 1.
FENCING
Mariel Zagunis (Beaverton, Ore.) and Ibtihaj Muhammad (Maplewood, N.J.) finished first and second at the saber world cup on March 1 in Bologna, Italy. Zagunis defeated Muhammad, 15-9, in the final to win her second straight gold.
FIELD HOCKEY
In Craig Parnham's coaching debut, the U.S. women's field hockey team opened the IHF World League Round 2 with a 6-0 win over Brazil on March 3 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Claire Laubach (Centerville, Va.) started the scoring in the 38th minute, and added a second goal later in the game.
GYMNASTICS
Jake Dalton (Reno, Nev.) and Katelyn Ohashi (Plano, Texas) captured the men's and women's all-around titles at the 2013 AT&T American Cup on March 2 in Worcester, Mass. Simone Biles (Spring, Texas) finished just behind Ohashi in second.
Alex McMurtry (Midlothian, Va.) earned top all-around honors at the 2013 Nastia Liukin Cup on March 1 in Worcester, Mass. McMurtry rallied from behind to claim the title, performing nearly flawlessly on the final three rotations.
SKI & SNOWBOARD
Laurenne Ross (Bend, Ore.) raced to her first career podium in the women's downhill, finishing second at the FIS World Cup on March 2 in Garmisch- Partenkirchen, Germany. Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, Calif.) finished third in the super-G, setting up a final race showdown with Slovenia's Tina Maze for the title. Mancuso also finished fourth in the super combined.
Travis Ganong (Squaw Valley, Calif.) led Team USA in the wind-shortened downhill at the FIS World Cup on March 2 in Kvitfjell, Norway. Ganong finished 16th, while Ted Ligety (Park City, Utah) and Andrew Weibrecht (Lake Placid, N.Y.) finished tied for 18th in the super-G.
The U.S. battled its way to its best finish in the relay at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, held Feb. 20-March 3 in Val di Fiemme, Italy. Liz Stephen (E. Montpelier, Vt.) and Jessie Diggins (Afton, Minn.) skied strong legs to place fourth. Stephen raced to fifth in the 10-kilometer individual skate. Meanwhile, Noah Hoffman (Aspen, Colo.) skied into 15th place in the 15K freestyle cross-country race. In the 50K classic, Hoffman led the U.S, finishing 27th. On March 1, Andy Newell (Shaftsbury, Vt.), Kris Freeman (Andover, N.H.), Hoffman and Tad Elliott (Durango, Colo.) finished 10th in the men's 4x10K. In Nordic combined, Billy Demong (Vermontville, N.Y.) finished 15th, while teammate Taylor Fletcher (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) finished 17th. Demong and Fletcher teamed up in the team sprint to place sixth on March 2.
Shaun White (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Kelly Clark (West Dover, Vt.) soared to snowboard halfpipe gold at the Burton U.S. Open on March 2 in Vail, Colo. The victory was White's fifth U.S. Open title and the sixth for Clark. Louie Vito (Sandy, Utah) finished third, while Hannah Teter (Belmont, Vt.) and Arielle Gold (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) rounded out the top-three spots in the women's competition.
John Teller (Mammoth Lakes, Calif.) held on to win the Sprint Grand Prix at Canyons on March 1 in Park City, Utah. Tom Wallasch (Mammoth Lakes, Calif.) finished second in the men's race, while Madeline Riffel (Mammoth Lakes, Calif.) recovered from an early crash to finish second in the women's race - her first career podium. In snowboardcross, Faye Gulini (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Trevor Jacob (Mammoth Lakes, Calif.) took home the titles.
U .S. sit skier Stephen Lawler (Burlington, Vt.) won the silver medal in the men's downhill in a time of 1:38.52 at the IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships in Solleftea, Sweden. Laurie Stephens (Wenham, Mass.) claimed her second medal of the world championships, winning bronze in the super-G sitting event.
SOCCER
The U.S. men lost in overtime to Mexico, 3-1, in the 2013 CONCACF U-20 Championship final on March 3 in Puebla, Mexico. The U.S. finished the tournament with a 4-1 record and was the only team to score against the host nation.
SPEEDSKATING
Brittany Bowe (West Jordan, Utah) and Brian Hansen (Glenview, Ill.) swept the 1,000-meter races on March 3 at the world cup event in Erfurt, Germany. Bowe won gold with a time of 1:15.34, while Hansen finished in 1:09.79 to claim the title. Hansen also earned bronze in the 1,500. A day earlier, Jonathan Kuck (Park City, Utah) claimed gold in the B-division 10-kilometer, while Patrick Meek (Park City, Utah) was second. Maria Lamb (Park City, Utah) placed third in the 5K.
SWIMMING
Alex Meyer (Ithaca, N.Y.) placed third at the FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup on March 1 in Eilat, Israel. Meyer finished in 1:53:38, just 8.5 seconds behind the winner. Christine Jennings (Longmont, Colo.) was the top U.S. women's finisher, placing fourth in 2:02:55.59.
WRESTLING
Tervel Dlagnev (Columbus, Ohio) won gold in the 120 kg. division at the Alexander Medved International on March 2 in Minsk, Belarus. Jon Reader (Ames, Iowa; -84 kg.), Wynn Michalak (Champaign, Ill.; -96 kg.) and Zach Rey (Hopatcong, N.J.; -120 kg.) all earned bronze medals at the tournament.
The U.S. lost to Japan, 4-3, in the third-place dual meet of the women's world cup to finish fourth on March 3 in Ulan Bator, Mongolia. Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo.; -48 kg.), Helen Maroullis (Rockville, Md.; -55 kg.) and Alli Ragan (Carbondale, Ill.; -59 kg.) all won their respective matches to give the U.S. a 3-1 lead, but Japan won the final three matches to claim bronze.
