As the NCAA Division I basketball scholarship offers increased, so did Dezmyn Trent’s desire to play for one school.
Trent, the two-time Narrows 3A Most Valable Player at Foss High School, gave Boise State an oral commitment Tuesday night. The 6-foot-4 shooting guard was also The News Tribune’s All-Area player of the year, and a member of the 3A all-state team as well.
Trent mentioned three things he thought made the difference in him choosing Boise State over Seattle University, San Jose State and Idaho — and with hard-charging Oregon State also in the mix.
Trent bonded with Broncos second-year assistant John Rillie, a former standout at Tacoma Community College and Gonzaga University. Rillie was the first assistant to start paying close attention to Trent, back in 2010.
Second, Trent likes the location of the college. “It’s not too close … but not too far away,” he said Tuesday.
And the Broncos run an up-tempo motion offense in the Mountain West Conference with young talent in the backcourt with which Trent can grow.
“I think the biggest thing is the opportunity to play right away,” Foss coach Mike Cocke’ said. “They are talking about him playing as a freshman. They are a program on the rise. To go and play in one of the toughest conferences in the country is a big deal.”
Trent is the only shooting guard recruit Boise State will sign in 2012-13. He is making his official visit to the school Friday and is expected to sign his letter of intent in April.
As a three-year starter, Trent had his best showing this season for the Narrows 3A runner-up Falcons, who advanced to the regional tournament before being eliminated by Mountlake Terrace. He averaged 26.9 points per game, and his 618 points are a Foss single-season record.
