The San Francisco 49ers announced that they have released kicker David Akers.

"The 49ers would like to thank David for his service, dedication and leadership over the past two years," said 49ers general manager Trent Baalke. "He is a true professional who represented himself and this organization with class. We wish him, and his family, all the best."

Akers, 38, struggled in the regular season last year, converting on 69 percent of his attempts, his lowest since 1999, when he was a member of the Philadelphia Eagles.

The six-time Pro Bowler nearly lost his job when the 49ers brought in Billy Cundiff for a tryout just after New Year's Day. However, he performed well in the postseason, connecting on four of his five attempts, including 3-for-3 in the Super Bowl against the Baltimore Ravens.

In 221 games with the Redskins (1998), Eagles (1999-2010) and 49ers (2011-12), Akers has connected on 367-of-453 field goal attempts and 521-of-527 PATs. In 2011, he set the NFL record for most field goals made (44) and attempted (52).
