The state Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) recently released its list of statewide school performance in low-income schools, as required by the federal government.

The list covers schools that receive federal Title I funding, which goes to high-poverty schools.

Schools can receive one of four designations, based on state test scores and/or graduation rates over three years:

• Reward schools: Can be high-performing schools or schools making excellent progress. Highest-performing schools have met their objectives for all students and in each of 11 subgroups of students. High-progress schools are among the state’s top 10 percent of Title I schools.

• Priority schools: Among the lowest performing 5 percent of Title I schools in the state for all student categories. This designation includes 27 schools that have received federal School Improvement Grant (SIG) funding to help them work to improve.

• Focus schools: Among the lowest performing 10 percent of Title I schools in the state, based on subgroup performance.

• Emerging schools: Neither Priority nor Focus schools, but are at risk of moving into one of those categories.
