Hoyas crush Orange in Big East finale

Fifth-ranked Georgetown emphatically ended its Big East rivalry against No. 17 Syracuse, wrapping up the regular-season title with a 61-39 win over the Orange in Washington on Saturday.

Fifth-ranked Georgetown emphatically ended its Big East rivalry against No. 17 Syracuse, wrapping up the regular-season title with a 61-39 win over the Orange in Washington on Saturday.

The Hoyas held the Orange to Syracuse’s lowest scoring output in 558 Big East games – and its fewest points in any game since a 36-35 victory over Kent State on Dec. 1, 1962, back before shot clocks and 3-pointers. It also was the series’ biggest margin since Georgetown beat Syracuse by 27 in 1985.

Syracuse, which will join the Atlantic Coast Conference, shot 32 percent from the field (15-for-47), including 1-for-11 on 3-pointers.

Markel Starks scored 19 points for the Hoyas.

No. 3 Duke 69, at North Carolina 53: Seth Curry scored 20 points as the Blue Devils (27-4, 14-4 ACC) swept the Tar Heels (22-9, 12-6).

At Baylor 81, No. 4 Kansas 58: Pierre Jackson had 28 points and 10 assists as the Bears (18-13, 9-9 Big 12) kept the Jayhawks (26-5, 14-4) from claiming the outright conference title.

Even after its worse loss in seven years, Kansas will be the No. 1 seed for the Big 12 tournament.

At No. 6 Miami 62, Clemson 49: Kenny Kadji scored a season-high 23 points as the Hurricanes (24-6, 15-3 Atlantic Coast) beat the Tigers (13-17, 5-13) to win the conference title.

At No. 8 Louisville 73, No. 24 Notre Dame 57: Gorgui Dieng had 20 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots, and Franklin High of Seattle graduate Peyton Siva added 13 points and five assists as the Cardinals (26-5, 14-4 Big East) beat the Fighting Irish (23-8, 11-7) to earn a share of the conference title.

At No. 13 Oklahoma State 76, No. 9 Kansas State 70: Le’Bryan Nash scored 24 points for the Cowboys (23-7, 13-5 Big 12). The Wildcats (25-6, 14-4), with Kansas also losing, share the league title with the Jayhawks.

At Kentucky 61, No. 11 Florida 57: Julius Mays’ two free throws with 9.4 seconds remaining capped a comeback from a seven-point deficit for the Wildcats (21-10, 12-6 overall) against the Gators (24-6, 14-4), who missed their final 11 shots.

At Air Force 89, No. 12 New Mexico 88: Todd Fletcher hit a 3-pointer with 3.5 seconds remaining as the Falcons (17-12, 8-8 Mountain West) shocked the Lobos (26-5, 13-3) for the program’s first win over a top 15 team.

No. 15 Marquette 69, at St. John’s 67 (OT): Vander Blue scored at the buzzer as the Golden Eagles (23-7, 14-4 Big East) beat the Red Storm (16-14, 8-10) to earn a share of the league title.

At No. 16 Saint Louis 78, La Salle 54: Dwayne Evans had 16 points and 17 rebounds as the Billikens (24-6, 13-3 Atlantic 10) beat the Explorers (21-8, 11-5).

No. 20 Pittsburgh 81, at DePaul 66: J.J. Moore scored 21 points off the bench, and the Panthers (24-7, 12-6 Big East) shot a school-record 72 percent (33-for-46) to beat the Blue Demons (11-20, 2-16).

At No. 25 Memphis 86, UAB 71: Joe Jackson had 17 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds to lead the Tigers (27-4, 16-0 Conference USA) past the Blazers (15-16, 7-9).

FASTBREAKS

Scott Bamforth scored 18 points as Weber State (24-5, 18-2 Big Sky) beat Eastern Washington (10-21, 7-13), 65-57, in Ogden, Utah. ... Utah State (21-9, 11-7 Western Athletic) rolled to a 71-51 victory over Texas-San Antonio (8-21, 3-14) in Ogden, Utah. Federal Way High grad Michael Hale III led the Roadrunners with 21 points.
