    KENNEWICK -- Thousands of students from around the Mid-Columbia will take over the east end of Columbia Park this week as part of the annual Salmon Summit.

    The event is sponsored by the Benton County Conservation District and organizers are expecting 120 classes to visit the park's east boat launch Tuesday and Wednesday to release salmon the students have raised in their classrooms, according to a release. They'll also participate in various educational activities in the park.

    The boat launch will be closed to the public both days from midnight to 3:30 p.m. The public still will be able to access the park but the road through the east end of the park will be closed from the east boat launch to the veterans memorial between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. each day. Barricades will be placed and there will be someone directing traffic.

    The engraved name of Margaret Anderson, the Mount Rainier National Park ranger killed Jan. 1, 2012, was unveiled this morning at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.

  • Bellingham gathering will bless fishing fleet May 11

    BELLINGHAM - The annual Fishermen's Memorial and Blessing of the Fleet will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 11, at Zuanich Point Park next to Squalicum Harbor.

    The gathering will include a blessing for local fishers as they start their season. At the end of the ceremony, a wreath commemorating fishers who died at sea will be placed on the waters of Bellingham Bay.

    Refreshments and seafood entree will be provided after the event in the Squalicum Boathouse. Participants are invited to bring a salad or side dish.
