Many people in Whatcom County might not know who architect Henry Klein was, but they likely are familiar with several of the buildings that he designed.
The award-winning Skagit County architect, who died March 5 at the age of 92, designed the Performing Arts Center and Mathes and Nash residence halls at Western Washington University, as well as the senior activity centers in Bellingham and Ferndale.
Prominent buildings in Skagit County that he designed include the Skagit County Administration Building, Mount Vernon Public Library, The Museum of Northwest Art in La Conner, and Mount Vernon High School's gym and field house
After working in New York City and Portland, Ore., Klein established an office in Mount Vernon in the early 1950s. He later founded Henry Klein and Associates, which became The Henry Klein Partnership and now is known as HKP architects.
An exhibit about his work will run April 14 through May at Skagit County Historical Museum, 501 S. Fourth St., La Conner. Museum hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, except in April, when the museum is open daily.
