MacPhee sworn in as Everson police chief in emotional ceremony

Family, friends, law enforcement officials and community members filled the seats Tuesday night, March 12, to welcome a new police chief in a ceremony marked by smiles, hugs, handshakes and a few tears.

EVERSON - Packed city council meetings usually mean there are hotly debated issues on the agenda.

But in Everson, family, friends, law enforcement officials and community members filled the seats Tuesday night, March 12, to welcome a new police chief in a ceremony marked by smiles, hugs, handshakes and a few tears.

Dan MacPhee sat off to the side as Mayor John Perry recalled how then-police sergeant MacPhee stepped up to fill the position after longtime and beloved chief Erik Ramstead died Jan. 15 from cancer. Perry conducted the swearing-in ceremony to make MacPhee chief of the small department.

Amy Ramstead, widow of Erik, then stepped up to pin MacPhee with the chief's badge, tears filling her eyes. She gave him a name plate with his new title. Ramstead's daughters, Western Washington University students Lauren and Erika, cried as they watched.

The meeting was paused so MacPhee could be congratulated by the audience, which included representatives of the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office and the Lynden, Everson and Nooksack police departments.

  • Everson man, 79, killed in tractor accident

    EVERSON - A retired dairy farmer has died after getting crushed by a tractor at his Everson home.

    No signs of foul play were found in the death of Jake Tiemersma Jr., 79, according to the Whatcom County Medical Examiner's Office. Tiemersma suffered the fatal injuries in his barn on North Washington Street late Thursday evening, April 18.

    Police arrived to find his large utility tractor, equipped with a front-loader, pressing up against a wall of the barn, still running, about 35 feet away from Tiemersma's body, said Everson Police Chief Dan MacPhee. The tractor had rolled over him.

  • Everson Police Chief Erik Ramstead remembered for his upbeat service to the community

    EVERSON - Erik Ramstead, Everson's longtime police chief, was a big man who played a large role in his community, so his death at the age of 50 leaves a massive hole in many people's hearts.

    Ramstead, who died Tuesday, Jan. 15, served in the Everson Police Department for 28 years, all but three of them as chief. He was one of the longest serving police chiefs in the state.

    Ramstead's police work was just one part of his life of service to the community. He was also active in Everson Lions Club, including a stint as president, and he helped start a program that raises scholarship money for Nooksack Valley High School seniors.

  • Procession begins to honor Everson Police Chief Erik Ramstead

    A procession of law enforcement vehicles made their way through parts of Whatcom County Monday morning, Jan. 21, en route to Bellingham to honor Everson Police Chief Erik Ramstead, who died last week.

    Despite the below-freezing temperatures and heavy fog, people lined up to watch the procession and honor Ramstead. The cars gathered at Nooksack Valley High School before 8 a.m. and went through Everson and Nooksack before arriving in Bellingham about 9:15 a.m.

    About 100 people lined the streets in Nooksack as the procession went by. In Everson, the crowd was about double that size.

  • Longtime Everson police chief Erik Ramstead, 50, dies

    EVERSON - Erik Ramstead, the longtime chief of the Everson Police Department, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 15.

    Ramstead, 50, worked with the department for 28 years.

    Everson Mayor John Perry confirmed the death in a statement: "We share with heavy hearts that Everson Police Chief Erik Ramstead passed away this morning. At the time, he was surrounded by his family. This great loss will be felt throughout our community."

  • Hundreds gather to honor Everson police chief

    Everson and Nooksack residents bundled up in the freezing cold Monday morning, Jan. 21, to say goodbye to a good man.

    Families gathered at the end of their driveways and hundreds of people clustered on sidewalks lined with flags to mark the procession for Everson Police Chief Erik Ramstead, 50, who died Tuesday, Jan. 15, after a long battle with cancer.

    The procession of about 50 law enforcement and family cars left Nooksack Valley High School at 8 a.m. and wound through both towns before reaching Bellingham's Assumption Catholic Church about an hour later for a memorial Mass. Along the route, businesses from gas stations to coffee stands had signs thanking Ramstead for his 28 years with the Everson Police Department, all but three of them as chief.
