A pellet gun was mistaken for a military-style rifle near Capital High School and Jefferson Middle School Thursday morning, according to the Olympia Police Department.
A teacher saw a boy carrying what he thought was a rifle in the area of the schools and called police.
Officers found two teens across the street from the middle school carrying a pellet gun that imitated an M-4 military rifle. The boy had been showing the gun to a friend and was unaware police had been called. Neither school was put on lockdown.
"Use good judgement when transporting either actual firearms or other things that can easily be mistaken for lethal firearms, such as models, toys, paintball guns and BB guns," stated Chief Ronnie Roberts in a release.
It was the second false alarm involving firearms in the vicinity of a school this week.
Roosevelt Elementary School, Reeves Middle School and Olympia Regional Learning Academy were put on lockdown Tuesday morning when someone claimed to have seen a man wearing a ski mask walking toward the elementary school carrying an assault rifle.
The alleged weapon turned out to be an umbrella. Multiple agencies were called to the area.
