The Washington State Transportation Commission will propose new toll rates for the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and State Route 520 floating bridge, and consider the findings of an expert review panel on the Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Program at its meeting next week in Olympia.
The meeting will start 9 a.m. each day, Tuesday and Wednesday, March 19 and 20, at the Transportation Building, 310 Maple Park Ave. SE, on the Capital Campus in Olympia. The meeting is open to the public and persons wishing to speak to the commission may do so during the public comment periods scheduled at the close of each day.
Tuesday morning, the commission will be briefed on traffic and toll-revenue projections modeled for the State Route 99/Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement tunnel. Commissioners will also receive recent data on the SR 520 traffic management program, including enhanced transit and vanpool options available since tolling began in December 2011.
In the afternoon, the commission will discuss toll rate changes for the SR 520 floating bridge and the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. It is expected to arrive at a decision on rate changes and will release its toll-rate proposals for public review. Public hearings on the proposed toll rates will take place in April and May. The proposed new toll rates would take effect on July 1, 2013. More details about the public hearings will be released after the commission meeting.
On Wednesday, the commission will consider an expert review panel’s February 2013 report, assessing the feasibility and viability of the Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Program. The commission also will hear from representatives of the Transportation Improvement Board and the County Road Administration Board on how city and county road projects are being designed to maximize value and minimize costs. Washington State Department of Transportation staff will brief the commission on the cost drivers for highway construction projects. The commission also will learn of responses across the nation to MAP-21, the new federal transportation policy legislation. In addition, the commission will discuss the future of WSDOT with new Secretary of Transportation Lynn Peterson.
