FERNDALE - Sen. Doug Ericksen, R-Ferndale, and Rep. Vincent Buys, R-Lynden, will appear at a town hall meeting Saturday, March 16, at Ferndale High School.

Those interested are invited to attend from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the high school auditorium, 5830 Golden Eagle Drive. Ericksen and Buys want to hear about issues that concern residents of the 42nd Legislative District.

Rep. Jason Overstreet, R-Lynden, is unable to participate due to a family commitment.

The legislators are at a lull in this year's session, between a major bill deadline and negotiations on the 2013-15 budget.

For more information on the meeting, call the senator's office at 360-786-7682.

  • Retail plans for Slater on hold as Ferndale, Lummi Nation fail to reach agreement

FERNDALE - Lummi Nation was on the verge of jump-starting major retail development along Slater Road but canceled the possible sale of 25 acres to a major retailer because the tribe and the city of Ferndale failed to reach agreement on how to divide sales tax revenue.

The Lummis haven't divulged the potential purchaser or plans for the property at the southwest corner of Slater and Rural Avenue. But drafts of the agreement discuss significant sales tax receipts and traffic impact fees, which suggest a big-box store.

The store would have been the first of many envisioned between Rural Avenue and Interstate 5, and along the freeway to the south.

  • Ferndale to hold meetings on library before bond vote

FERNDALE - City residents will have at least three opportunities in the coming weeks to ask questions and comment on a bond measure for a new library.

Ferndale voters will decide on April 23 whether the city should issue a $550,000 bond to fully fund construction of a $5.4 million library building near City Hall. If 60 percent of voters approve, the city would establish a property tax to repay the bond. The owner of a $250,000 home would pay $11.86 a year.

City Council is considering a resolution Monday, April 1, to show support for the ballot measure. The public is invited to comment on the resolution at the meeting, which starts at 6 p.m. at the Community Resource Center, 5694 Second Ave.

  • Ferndale may go to every-other-week garbage pickup

FERNDALE - The city might offer garbage service no more often than once every other week, to encourage recycling and reduce truck traffic.

City Council members discussed the idea with SSC's chief financial officer, Amber Jones, at the Public Works and Utilities Committee meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 30. The committee probably will review the idea again on Feb. 13. A start date for the new service, if any, has not been determined.

In meetings of the Solid Waste Advisory Committee late last year, committee members called for eliminating Sanitary Service Company's weekly service. In outlying parts of Whatcom County, trucks can travel several miles to pick up one container of garbage, city Administrator Greg Young said.

  • Ferndale voters approving bond for new library in early returns

FERNDALE - The city's voters were on their way to approving a $550,000 bond to help pay for a new Ferndale Library, according to early ballot returns Tuesday, April 23.

The measure was passing with 62 percent approval, and 38 percent voting no. A total of 627 votes separated the two sides, with 2,581 ballots counted on Tuesday.

It needs to be approved by 60 percent or more of the voters to pass.
