Love to sing? Like folk music? Then celebrate the coming of spring with the Puget Sound Revels folks who are gathering next Wednesday for their annual Spring Sing at King’s Books.
If you don’t know the Revels, you’re missing out.
Every December, this band of enthusiastic musicians, dancers and singers put on a Yuletide show at the Rialto based on folk traditions and song of different periods and places.
They bring the same ineffable spirit (and good voice) to various singing events throughout the year, usually timed with the seasons, in public places and free.
The Spring Sing is timed for the spring equinox, when day and night are equal and our hemisphere moves into ever-longer days.
That in itself is good enough reason to sing, after our long gray winter, but singing with the Revels crew is another.
They bring the song-sheets for everything from sailor revelry to Irish jigs to music from their shows, and they often bring instruments too: whistles, fiddles, bodruns (that’s an Irish drum) to fill it out. They’ll even bring snacks.
So all you need to do is bring yourself and a friend. If you have an instrument and like to play, go ahead and bring it.
And keep an eye out for future Revels events, such as the May Day Celebration on May 1.
But the main thing is to sing – and that’s always free, wherever you do it.
It’s from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at King’s Books, 218 St. Helens Ave., Tacoma. Call 253-756-1804 or go to pugetsoundrevels.org.
