Southridge complex festivities set for Saturday

Kennewick — The one-year anniversary celebration of the Southridge Sports and Events Complex in Kennewick is set from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The community event kicks off with a performance from the Kennewick High School drumline, followed by performances from local groups, demonstrations, free food while supplies last and Wii games on a big screen.

Everyone over 18 years old will have a chance to win an Apple iPad donated by Affinity at Southridge.

Carousel of Dreams horses will be on display for viewing as the complex is the future site for the historic carousel.

The city of Kennewick also will unveil the first of four outdoor sculptures, titled Happy Human, created by Oregon sculptor C.J Rench.

The large sculptures were commissioned by the Kennewick Arts Commission and depict playful humans.

The one being installed today looks like a child doing a handstand, and is a companion piece to one that will be placed in one of the Southridge area roundabouts, said Terry Walsh, executive director of employee and community relations for the city.

The other three sculptures will be installed at three different roundabouts at Southridge next week.

Those pieces will be installed at the Plaza Way/Ridgeline roundabout, Southridge Boulevard/Ridgeline roundabout and the last one will be positioned in a future roundabout in the area.

The sports complex is off Highway 395 at 2901 Southridge Blvd. in Kennewick.

    The Kennewick Arts Commission honored a hotel, an organization promoting the arts and a city employee.

    The 2012 Energize the Arts awards were announced at the Kennewick City Council meeting this week.

    Linda Moran, vice chairwoman of the commission, presented the awards -- lightning bolts of clear plastic on a black base -- for visual and performing arts along with a special recognition, the Heritage Award.

    A wood-fired pizza restaurant is expected to built near the Southridge sports complex after a land deal approved Tuesday by the Kennewick City Council.

    The council voted unanimously to sell 2.8 acres at the corner of Highway 395 and Hildebrand Road for almost $413,000.

    The buyer, H & H Northwest Companies of Portland, intends to build a Rock Wood-fired Pizza & Spirits restaurant.

  • Kennewick's streak of spotless audits is over

    A disagreement between the city of Kennewick and the Washington State Auditor's Office on Kennewick's 1-year-old Southridge sports pavilion has ended the city's streak of 14 consecutive spotless audits.

    The state auditor claims Kennewick should have given contractors a chance to bid on the project again when it decided to change the construction materials and size of the pavilion at the Southridge Sports and Events Complex, according to the audit report released Monday.

    But Kennewick officials say that adding 8,000 square feet to the pavilion and using steel didn't change the cost of the $3.3 million project.

  • Carousel of Dreams construction could start by end of March

    Dirt may begin moving for the Carousel of Dreams at Kennewick's Southridge Sports and Events Complex at the end of March.

    The volunteer board of the Three Rivers Carousel Foundation is working on getting the necessary permits for the carousel's new home.

    Eric Van Winkle, the foundation board's chairman, said two-thirds of the money needed has already been donated. The group is still fundraising for an additional $600,000 for the $1.9 million project.

  • Kamiakin seniors' sculpture project taking shape

    KENNEWICK -- Brian Garcia was in a tight spot while working on his horse sculpture recently at Kamiakin High School.

    He climbed inside the framing of a 61/2-foot-tall sculpture to help fellow senior Ben Sullivan weld one of the shoulders. They've worked late nights for the past week and a half to get it done in time for graduation.

    The sculpture, which will sit on their school's campus when completed, isn't the only project the seniors are working on. They're also involved with a dozen advanced shop and metal art students making metal silhouettes of native animals commissioned by the Hanford Reach Interpretive Center.
