A warrant was issued Friday for a 26-year-old man charged with vehicular assault for a car wreck that seriously injured a man last year in McKenna.

The accident happened Sept. 18 on state Route 507 near 323rd Street Court South.

According to charging papers:

The man worked a 14-hour shift and then spent time with his girlfriend before driving her home to Yelm about 11:30 p.m. On his way home, he fell asleep and his car crossed the center line and crashed head-on into a pickup truck, which rolled.

Washington State Patrol troopers arrived to find paramedics trying to extricate the pickup driver, who suffered a broken nose, multiple rib fractures, a fractured left arm and fractures to both feet. The driver of the car, a Lexus, was nowhere to be found.

“A witness to the collision states the driver of the (car) climbed out of the vehicle and walked away from the scene without contacting the driver of the Ford pickup,” documents state.

Troopers went to the man’s house – about three miles from the accident scene – and talked to his family. His brother later called 911 to report the man was at a neighbor’s home and needed medical treatment. He suffered a fractured sternum and lacerated liver.

The man told troopers he didn’t remember the collision.
