Enrollment has started for a basic crew and sailing course in Tacoma. The course, offered by the Tacoma Mountaineers, will begin in April.

Course participants will learn what it takes to be a sailboat crew member.

After successfully completing the course, participants will be able to rig a sloop-style sailboat, assist in departing from and arriving at a dock under power, have a basic understanding of sail trim and sailboat maneuvering, understand basic personal gear requirements and safety practices and develop a basic understanding of charts and navigation.

The classroom sessions will be April 1, 8 and 15, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and will be held at the Tacoma Mountaineers Program Center, 2302 N. 30th St., Tacoma. On-the-dock training and the first sailing session will be April 6 or 7, with the second sailing session April 13 or 14. Participants must also take part in two experience sails by June 9. The dates and times of those trips will be set once the classes begin.

The cost is $115 for Mountaineer members and $150 for nonmembers. The registration deadline is March 31. To register, go to tacomamountaineers.org.
