People interested in helping write the official statements for and against a sales-tax measure that would pay for a proposed regional aquatics center have until 12 p.m. April 3 to apply.

The statements will appear in the voters pamphlet. The Tri-Cities Regional Public Facilities District is proposing a one-tenth of 1 percent sales-tax increase to pay for the aquatics facility in Pasco.

The measure is expected to appear on the August primary ballot.

Each committee can have up to three people. The board will give preference to registered voters living in the district and also attempt to appoint people representing all three cities in the district.

To get an application, e-mail gluper@bfcog.us or call 943-9185.

  • Aquatics center in Tri-Cities closes in on reality

Imagine a sprawling aquatics center in the middle of the Tri-Cities, visible from a well-traveled interstate highway, with a competition pool, a surf simulator, slide towers, a wave pool and hundreds of swimmers splashing, racing, plunging, gliding and diving year-round.

It's only an idea now -- a vision of what could be -- but it might become a reality before too long, depending on the outcome of a public vote.

A regional board has been working for months on an aquatics center proposal and is on the cusp of several key decisions, including the timing of a sales-tax measure to pay for the facility and what features it could offer.

The Kennewick Public Facilities District board is scheduled to discuss a possible sales-tax measure during its meeting Thursday.

The increase would pay for expansion of the convention center -- something officials have said would make it more competitive in the region.

The regional board proposing an aquatics center in west Pasco agreed Thursday on a consultant to create a conceptual design.

Water Technology Inc., or WTI, will be able to build off work it did when the center was planned for the TRAC facility near Road 68 in Pasco. The regional facility now is planned on land near Sandifur Parkway.

The project is contingent on voters in Pasco, Richland and Kennewick approving a one-tenth of 1 percent sales-tax increase to cover costs.
