Coast Guard open house is today in Kennewick

The Coast Guard will have an open house on Clover Island in Kennewick from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.

Boaters and families will be able to learn about equipment, procedures and safety.

They can tour vessels and facilities and watch demonstrations of life jackets, navigation and knot tying.

Youths interested in careers in the Coast Guard and other military branches also will have the chance to learn more and meet with recruiters.

There will be displays of other emergency vehicles and rescue techniques from fire departments.

Hot dogs and refreshments will be served.

The Coast Guard building is at 434 Clover Island Drive in Kennewick.

    LUMMI ISLAND - The U.S. Coast Guard came to the aid of two people as their 38-foot boat began taking on water south of Lummi Island Friday, April 19.

    At about 10:40 a.m., the Coast Guard received a radio call from the pleasure craft White Fox, which was taking on water south of Lummi Island, near Vendovi Island, according to a news release from the Coast Guard.

    The Coast Guard launched a response boat from Bellingham and a helicopter from Port Angeles. The response boat arrived about 20 minutes later.
