The man who died outside McCleary while trying to remove from his car a piece of debris he struck March 16 on state Route 8 has been identified as Scott McEvers of Olympia.
McEvers, 40, apparently suffered a heart attack unrelated to striking the debris, said the Washington State Patrol. The trooper who responded performed CPR, but McEvers was later pronounced dead.
The debris had fallen from a truck driven by Michael Austin of Aberdeen. When Austin returned to the scene in search of the debris, he apparently panicked and ran into the woods when he saw police, the State Patrol said. Troopers and McCleary police found him by using a tracking dog.
Austin was taken into custody and released. He will not face charges for fleeing police, but may face charges related to the unsecured load and driving without a license.
