Tacoma-Pierce County Crime Stoppers is helping raise money for the funeral of a 9-year-old boy killed in a suspected drunken driving crash in Purdy last weekend.

A memorial for Donovan Best is set for Sunday in the Garden Chapel at Mountain View Funeral Home in Lakewood.

Expenses are nearing $6,000, which the family is struggling to meet.

“No matter what you think about the incident, this boy deserves to be remembered and buried with his family,” said Ed Troyer, spokesman for Crime Stoppers.

Donovan died Sunday after his uncle rolled a car while trying to exit state Route 16 in Purdy. The little boy, who Washington State Patrol troopers say was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the car. His 8-year-old sister was belted in and not hurt.

Pierce County prosecutors have charged the uncle, Jaycee Randall, with vehicular homicide and reckless endangerment. They say his blood-alcohol level was more than the twice the legal limit and that he had about 4 ounces of marijuana in his car.

Donations can be made via their PayPal page or by mailing a check to Crime Stoppers at 6824 19th St. W., No. 139, University Place, WA 98466.
