A Pierce County Superior Court commissioner Monday ordered a 19-year-old man held in jail while police continue to investigate his possible involvement in the death of a 2-year-old boy.
Commissioner Meagan Foley set Jake Musgas bail at $1.5 million.
Musga was arrested Saturday after someone called 911 to report an injured child in a downtown Tacoma hotel, deputy prosecutor Phil Sorensen told reporters outside court following Musgas first appearance.
The boy, Chayson Colley, later was declared dead. The Pierce County Medical Examiners Office said Monday the boy died of blunt force trauma to the head and abdomen and classified his death as homicide.
Musga is not the childs father, Sorensen said, but is dating the boys mother. He was baby-sitting Saturday morning while the mother was out visiting relatives, Sorensen said.
Sorensen said authorities are withholding most information from the public because the investigation is at a critical stage.
Formal charges are expected against Musga by Wednesday, including a possible murder count, Sorensen said.
A man and woman who attended Musgas court appearance left without talking to reporters.
