Federal agents arrested a 35-year-old Renton man today for allegedly trafficking in art he said was created by Tacoma native Dale Chihuly even though it wasnt.
The U.S. Attorneys Office in Seattle said the man sold or offered for sale glass art and paintings attributed to Chihuly.
However, an expert in Chihulys work examined the pieces at the request of the purchaser and determined they were fakes, the office said in a news release. The papers that were supposed to authenticate the works were also allegedly forged.
The man offered the works on eBay.
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
