A Bonney Lake man killed Friday in a car crash in Sumner made national headlines in November after he and a friend went snowboarding on Mount Rainier and were stranded for two nights in blizzard-like conditions.
Derek Tyndall, 22, was killed after crashing his car into a tree in the 4600 block of Sumner Tapps Highway. Tyndall was heading south about 2 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle, which crossed the northbound lanes and hit a tree, Sumner Police Chief Brad Moericke said Monday.
“We believe speed and alcohol were factors,” Moericke said.
Tyndall had to be extricated from his vehicle and died at the hospital.
He was not wearing a seat belt.
After Tyndall and a friend were stranded on Mount Rainier last winter, they dug a snow cave in the Upper Stevens Creek drainage around the 7,000-foot level and waited for search teams to rescue firstname.lastname@example.org
