A 29-year-old Georgia man was arrested Wednesday on a Pierce County warrant charging him with killing a man outside a Sumner motel in December, police said.
Authorities in the greater Atlanta area arrested Quentin Lorenzo Simmons about 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sumner Police Chief Brad Moericke said in a news release.
Pierce County prosecutors contend Simmons shot and killed Rigoberto D. Vargas outside the Sumner Motor Inn on Dec. 16. Simmons also is charged with first-degree assault for allegedly wounding three of Vargas’ companions, court records show.
It was unclear when Simmons would be extradited to Pierce County to answer the charges.
Georgia authorities last week arrested Simmons’ girlfriend, 29-year-old Elyse Monique Gladue, also known as Elyse Lattimer, on a charge of rendering criminal assistance. She is expected to be extradited to Tacoma sometime next week.
According to court records, Vargas and his companions were gathered in the motel parking lot smoking cigarettes about 12:30 a.m. when Gladue drove up and asked the men where she could get marijuana.
The men told her to move on, the records state. Simmons, who allegedly was in the passenger seat, took offense, the records show, and, after Gladue drove a short distance away, climbed out of the car and opened fire with a handgun.
“He appeared to target Rigoberto, shooting him several times, then began shooting at the rest of the group,” prosecutors wrote in charging papers.
The shooter then returned to the car, which sped off.
Authorities believe Gladue and Simmons, both Georgia residents, might have been in Pierce County to visit Gladue’s mother.Adam Lynn: 253-597-8644
