A Pierce County jury on Tuesday convicted a man of second-degree murder for shooting a relative to death last year at a Tacoma storage facility.
Agyei J. McDaniel, 39, is to be sentenced June 6. He also was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The jury got the case Monday. Jurors rejected arguments that McDaniel intentionally killed Patrick Nicholas, 40, but convicted him of killing Nicholas during the course of an assault.
The shooting occurred Dec. 4, 2012, at the Public Storage facility in the 1200 block of South Sprague Avenue.
According to charging papers, McDaniel and Nicholas, who were related through marriage, got into an argument at the facility that day. At one point, McDaniel drew a handgun and fired two shots at Nicholas, who was hit in the shoulder and head and died the next day.
McDaniel fled the scene but surrendered to police later that day.
He admitted firing at Nicholas but argued he did so in self-defense, saying the older man “ran up” on him and that he feared he might draw a gun.
