Two Lakewood police officers opened fire on a man Tuesday night after he refused their commands to put down a gun, then made a move they found threatening, the department reported.
The 28-year-old man died at the scene. The two officers, whose names have not yet been released, are on paid administrative leave, which is standard policy following an officer-involved shooting.
The shooting occurred about midnight at a house in the 14900 block of Washington Avenue Southwest.
Lt. Jeff Alwine said officers had been searching for a man being sought on a felony warrant earlier in the evening.
They later received a tip that he was at the house on Washington Avenue, Alwine said.
Two officers went to the house and saw the man inside. They told him to come out, but he refused, Alwine said.
At one point, the man pulled out a gun and did not comply with commands to put it down, Alwine said.
He then made a move that caused the officers to fear for their safety, and they opened fire, the lieutenant said.
The man died at the scene. Officers recovered a gun near the man’s body. His name has not yet been released.
