After May each year, the classical music season dies down. Audiences and musicians alike are on vacation, and we want to enjoy our brief summer outdoors. But in Tacoma, free lunchtime series continue, such as Listen Live at Lunch in the warm acoustics of First Lutheran Church and beaming out to Wright Park across the road.
Organized by concert pianist and church member Duane Hulbert, the series runs most Wednesdays at noon through Aug. 28. One hour of classical, jazz and even Celtic music, played by some of Tacoma’s best musicians, all for free — and you can still enjoy the weather.
Here’s the lineup:
July 10: Tenor John Marzano with Amy Boers on piano.
July 17: Evan Hulbert solos on bass accompanied by his dad, Duane.
July 24: Cellist Stuart Hake and pianist/organist Jeff Orr make a duo.
July 31: Celtic fiddle and piano music from Cali and Ryan McKasson.
Aug. 7: Connie Liljengren (piano) and David Salge (clarinet).
Aug. 14: University of Puget Sound husband and wife violin duo Maria Sampen and Tim Christie play virtuosic violin showpieces.
Aug. 28: Piano students of Paul Twedt.
Wednesdays through August, except Aug. 21. Free (also broadcast into Wright Park). First Lutheran Church, 524 S. I St., Tacoma. Call 253-272-1538 or go to firstlutherantacoma.com.Rosemary Ponnekanti: 253-597-8568 firstname.lastname@example.org blog.thenewstribune.com/arts
