Pierce County deputies catch up with man who faked paralysis to escape custody

Pierce County authorities have captured a suspected car thief who faked paralysis to escape custody.

Justin Wetrich, 30, was booked into the Pierce County Jail on Wednesday. The circumstances surrounding his arrest were not immediately reported.

Wetrich went on the lam in late May after crashing what deputies said was a stolen truck in Parkland while allegedly attempting to flee law enforcement.

Wetrich was Injured in the wreck, and deputies took him to a local hospital and left him there for treatment. Wetrich allegedly complained he was paralyzed, and doctors believed him, authorities said.

He later ran away, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

“It’s a miracle, or he’s faking it,” sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said at the time.

Wetrich is expected in Pierce County Superior Court on Thursday to answer a number of charges, including car theft and attempting to elude police.
