Some things wind down during summer, but not the monthly live jazz and blues concerts offered by two Tacoma churches. Upcoming free shows at Marine View Presbyterian and Immanuel Presbyterian include vocalist Gail Pettis and Tacoma blues legend Little Bill.
First up is Pettis, back at Jazz Live at Marine View after four years’ absence. A former orthodontist, Pettis segued to a decade-long career as a songstress with an effortless alto (and flawless smile). She has garnered rave reviews for her latest CD, “Here in the Moment.” Playing with her at Jazz Live on Sunday are Darin Clendenin on piano, Larry Holloway on bass, Mark Ivester on drums and special guest Marshall McDonald (lead alto sax in the Count Basie Band) on saxophones, clarinet and flute. The concert is at 5 p.m. July 14 at the church, 8469 Eastside Drive NE, Tacoma. Call 253-229-9206 or go to marineviewpc.org or gailpettis.com.
Blues Vespers at Immanuel Presbyterian will feature Tacoma blues legend Bill “Little Bill” Engelhart, winner of 10 awards from the Washington Blues Society. He’ll play with his trio (Rod Cook and Tom Morgan) and special guests Buck England and John Goforth. The concert is at 5 p.m. July 21 at the church, 901 N. J St., Tacoma.
