A Lakewood man has pleaded not guilty to second-degree assault of a child for allegedly trying to choke his infant daughter.
Pierce County Commissioner Meagan Foley on Wednesday ordered Grant Poutney, 21, held in lieu of $500,000 and ordered him to stay away from his wife and 3-month-old daughter.
The incident happened May 26 at the couple’s Lakewood home. According to charging papers:
The mother went to the bathroom and when she came out, she saw Poutney choking their daughter. She snatched the baby away and ordered him to leave.
Poutney called his boss at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and told him he had a “blackout” and snapped out of it when he heard his wife screaming.
The baby was taken to Madigan Army Medial Center, where doctors found she was recovering from six fractured ribs and two broken bones in her arm.
The mother told police she rarely left the baby with her husband but the two were alone March 13 while the mother got a haircut and worked for two hours.
The couple married after meeting online and the father asked her to get an abortion when she told him she was pregnant, according to court records.stacia.glenn@ thenewstribune.com
