Peace Community Center, a local nonprofit located in the heart of the Hilltop neighborhood, runs several programs for students to prevent learning loss and prepare kids for the upcoming school year.
Here’s what’s happening for Hilltop-area kids this summer:
• A five-week academic camp at McCarver Elementary School for 60 elementary students who will study reading and math with certified teachers, go swimming and enjoy other fun activities and go on field trips each week.
• A seven-week “Summer Academy” at Jason Lee Middle School for an estimated 75 sixth through eighth graders. Students take reading, writing and leadership classes four days a week and take field trips on Fridays.
• Support for high school students who are taking online credit-retrieval classes and a three-week leadership camp for students in grades nine through 12. Students will be asked to identify a community need and then apply for a grant to try to fund their project.
