An 18-year-old Sumner man lost control of his vehicle Saturday morning after spilling coffee on his leg and crashed his SUV into a shopping center in the 15000 block of Main Street in Sumner, police said.
East Pierce Fire and Rescue and Sumner Police responded after the man's Chevrolet Blazer veered off Main Street around 7 a.m. and struck the Verizon Wireless store at the Fred Meyer Shopping center. The vehicle also damaged the partition wall to the adjoining hair salon.
The driver was not injured in the accident, police said.
Regional sales manager Justin Lageorge said the Verizon store was awaiting the replacement of a new plate glass window, but was open for business Saturday morning.
Drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the crash, Sumner Police spokeswoman Carmen Palmer said, and the man was not cited for the incident. The driver's insurance company will likely be charged with the damages, she said.
"It's a good reminder that you need to be careful with hot beverages while driving," Palmer added.
