Free opera is wonderful, and free opera for the whole family is even better. On Saturday, anyone can dive into the art form at the Seattle Opera, which is kicking off its 50th anniversary celebration with a free open house, including a new opera trilogy “Our Earth.”
The open house is the day before the company opens its 2013 production of Wagner’s “Der Ring des Nibelungen,” but Saturday’s offerings have more to do with local myths and music than 19th-century Germany.
From 10 a.m. on, you and your family can see three-dimensional sidewalk art outside McCaw Hall (inspired by the “Ring” operas and on view through August), explore instruments in a petting zoo and make your own instruments.
There also will be performances by Lelavision, the Vashon Island-based husband-and-wife duo of Leah Mann and Ela Lamblin, who dance and play with giant musical sculptures to produce whimsical, uncanny sounds and mesmerizing physical theater.
Finally, in the afternoon, Seattle Opera’s Youth Chorus will team with the Seattle Youth Symphony and professional singers to present “Our Earth,” an opera trilogy local composer Eric Banks was commissioned to create for Seattle Opera. The operas tell the story of a quest for a missing salmon, traveling from Puget Sound upstream to a watershed in the Cascades. They feature characters such as Heron, Orca, Turtle and a human brother and sister who also are salmon. Perfect for children, the operas last 30 minutes each and are sung in English.
Here’s the schedule:
10 a.m.: Activities and Lelavision performances
Noon: “Heron and the Salmon Girl” from “Our Earth”
12:30 p.m.: Lelavision performance
1:15 p.m.: “Rushing Upriver” from “Our Earth”
2 p.m.: Kazoo demonstration
2:30 p.m.: “Every River Has Its People” from “Our Earth”
Open house guests will have an exclusive opportunity to subscribe to the four operas of Seattle Opera’s 50th anniversary season for only $50.
