All junior high and high school athletes in the Puyallup School District who participate in football, soccer, basketball and wrestling must undergo a concussion baseline screening before they can participate in those sports, effective with the start of this fall’s athletic season.
This month, the district will team with Sound Family Medicine and Apple Physical Therapy staff to offer student-athletes free concussion baseline screenings.
The screenings will be Friday and Aug. 19, 22 and 26 at Sparks Stadium, 601 Seventh Ave. SW in Puyallup.
Tenth-graders will be screened from 8-11 a.m., 11th-graders from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., and 12th-graders from 2-5 p.m. on all four days. Junior high students can arrive for testing any time from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on all four screening days.
Athletes involved in other low-impact sports can choose to voluntarily receive the baseline screening.
Athletes unable to attend the free baseline screenings must arrange the testing through a qualified medical care provider of their choice and at their own expense.Compiled by Debbie Cafazzo and Mary Anderson, staff writers
