Buckley barn burns, house spared in $25,000 loss

A fire destroyed a large barn in Buckley Thursday night but didn’t spread to the nearby house, according to East Pierce Fire & Rescue.

The homeowner pulled into his driveway in the 10900 block of 258th Avenue East about 9:30 p.m. and spotted flames coming from the two-story wooden barn.

He called 911, got all of his animals out and tried to extinguish the blaze.

“The homeowner definitely held the fire in check until the firefighters arrived,” Pierce County Fire Marshal Mark Carman said.

Crews said the barn was 40 percent involved when they arrived. They laid out 1,000 feet of hose, temporarily blocking 112th Street East.

The fire, which has been ruled accidental, did not spread to the house about 100 feet from the barn. Damages are estimated at $25,000 for the barn, which included horse stalls, a tack room and personal storage.
