He wasn’t hard to pick out.

The 44-year-old suspected shoplifter was the only person standing in the Puyallup River without a fishing pole.

“He had taken off his shirt and tried to hide it in his shorts and was standing in the masses of fisherman in the river,” Puyallup police Capt. Scott Engle said. “He just needed a fishing pole.”

Officers began looking for the man about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday after employees at a nearby store reported that he fled with $150 worth of clothing. Witnesses spotted the suspected shoplifter running down a trail in the 500 block of River Road, which leads to a popular fishing area.

The man was booked into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of theft. The stolen clothes were not recovered.
