The Hood Canal Tree Farm, 71,000 acres spanning three counties, will be closed to the public starting Aug. 26 due to increased fire danger, Olympic Resource Management announced Friday.
The land which is located in Kitsap, Mason and Jefferson counties is popular with hikers, hunters, mountain bikers and other users. The closure includes the timberlands near Port Gamble according to statement.
“The closure will remain in effect until significant rainfall occurs,” the statement announced. “… The company regrets the inconvenience to those who enjoy and respect the property, which is very popular with hunters and other recreationalists. However, the exceptionally dry conditions make for extreme fire hazard conditions and threaten private and public resources.”
A small fire that was quickly contained occurred on the property near Brinnon on Aug. 17. The cause of the fire was not determined.
