Schools on Tacoma’s East Side will kick off the new school year with a community parade and a festival Friday.
Starting from First Creek Middle School at 10:45 a.m., the second annual back-to-school parade will wind through neighborhoods near First Creek. Josh Garcia, deputy superintendent of Tacoma Public Schools, will serve as grand marshal, and the Lincoln High School drum line will provide the marching beat.
Staff, students and families from First Creek Middle School, its five feeder elementary schools — Blix, Boze, Lister, Roosevelt and Sheridan — and Lincoln High School, as well as community members, are invited to join.
The festival will begin at First Creek at 12:30 p.m. and end about 5 p.m. It will include entertainment, a free barbecue and carnival booths, as well as school supplies given on a first-come basis to children. Families also will be able to learn about school, health care and community organizations.
