Tacoma drivers have more than their fair share of vehicle accidents, according to a new report from Allstate Insurance Company.
The ninth Allstate Annual Best Drivers Report ranked Tacoma as 144th in driving safety among the country’s 200 largest cities.
Using the insurance company’s claims data, the report calculates how likely a collision is and how often the average driver can expect to get into a collision.
Tacomans are almost 24 percent more likely to get into an accident than the national average. The average time between accidents for Tacoma drivers is 8.1 years.
“We don’t want drivers in Tacoma to be discouraged by their ranking,” Shauna McBride, Allstate’s regional spokeswoman, said in a release. “Instead, we want the report to challenge drivers in Tacoma to make positive changes to their driving habits that will in turn make the city a safer place to live, work and raise families.”
Other Washington cities rated safer. Spokane came in at 45th and Vancouver ranked 82nd. But Tacomans beat Seattle drivers, whose city ranked 160th in driving safety.
The Allstate study declared Fort Collins, Colo., to be the safest city, where drivers are roughly 28 percent less likely to experience a collision than the national average. The most dangerous is Washington, D.C., where the average driver is in an accident every 4.8 years.
