Families in the Northeast Tacoma area were scheduled to receive recorded messages from Tacoma Public Schools Thursday evening telling them about coyote sightings near Crescent Heights Elementary and Meeker Middle School.
The school district said the message was prompted by coyote sightings in wooded and brushy areas in that neighborhood. School starts in Tacoma on Wednesday.
The district cited state Department of Fish and Wildlife advice on preventing conflicts with coyotes:
• Do not leave small children unattended in areas where there have been sightings.
• Rehearse what to do with your child.
• If you or your child encounter a coyote, don’t run. Instead try to look as big, mean and loud as possible.
• Children can shout “Go away coyote” to inform nearby adults of the coyote’s presence.Debbie Cafazzo, Staff writer
