Motorcyclist dies in high-speed crash

Staff writerSeptember 2, 2013

UPDATE 9:15 p.m.: The victim has been identified as Michael J. Young.

A 22-year-old Tacoma man died Monday when he crashed a speeding motorcycle in the Browns Point area, police said.

Michael J. Young had illegally passed several vehicles in a no-passing zone on state Route 509, Washington State Patrol Trooper Guy Gill said.

"Homeowners in the area heard the bike coming (and) estimated speeds in excess of 100 miles an hour," Gill said. While he couldn't confirm those estimates, "excessive speed is definitely a factor."

The southbound motorcycle crashed into a guard rail near Olympic Drive just before 5:30 p.m.

No one else was hurt.

Gill said Young did not have a motorcycle endorsement on his driver's license.
