Deputies: Chainsaw-wielding man shot dead in mobile home on Key Peninsula

A 19-year-old man was shot and killed late Monday after waving a chainsaw at his father’s girlfriend and yelling for her to leave his mobile home on the Key Peninsula, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies have not arrested the alleged shooter, who is the 27-year-old son of the woman, because it appears to be self-defense. Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said the department will turn the case over to the Prosecutor’s Office.

“It appears there’s a long-running feud between these people,” Troyer said.

The incident started about 11:30 p.m. Monday when the man demanded that his dad’s girlfriend and her son leave their property in the 16800 block of 82nd Street Northwest in Vaughn. When she refused, the man allegedly started the chainsaw and made threats about cutting people.

The woman’s son heard yelling and the whir of a chainsaw blade and came running inside the mobile home with a gun, Troyer said. He managed to talk the man into putting down the chainsaw.

“Unfortunately, he picked the chainsaw back up and started swinging it again,” Troyer said.

The woman’s son fired once, hitting the man in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
