A rare set of 1915 Cracker Jack baseball cards went for $40,000 Tuesday night at Tacoma’s Hamilton Auction Gallery.
The set is missing two cards. A near-mint collection was sold at auction in 2008 for $157,000.
“We’re a mom-and-pop auction house,” auctioneer Joe Lawson said last month. “We’ve handled some expensive things, like a Renoir watercolor, but I don’t think we’ve ever sold something for more than $35,000.” Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson and “Shoeless” Joe Jackson are among the players featured in the set.
Online prebidding over the past couple weeks drove the high bid for the cards to $10,750. The live auction started Tuesday night, and a bidder on the floor offered $21,000. The price quickly jumped to $30,000, and topped out at $40,000 from a buyer in the room. The buyer also must pay a 15-percent buyer’s premium, which brings the total outlay to $46,firstname.lastname@example.org
