A 26-year-old man who died Thursday in a rollover crash just north of Roy was trying to pass traffic when he lost control and crashed into a tree, according to the State Patrol.

The driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene, has been identified as Alexander Sherrell.

His passenger, a 26-year-old Puyallup man, was critically injured and taken to a local hospital. Neither man was wearing a seat belt, WSP reported.

The crash happened about 4:45 p.m. on state Route 507 at East Gate Road.

Troopers said Sherrell was traveling north in a 1996 Chevrolet convertible when he drove into the southbound lanes to pass other cars, lost control and veered off the road into a tree.
