The San Francisco 49ers got an extra third-down play in the first half because of an officiating error — and scored a touchdown on it. After a third-and-6 play at the Green Bay 10-yard line in the second quarter, Colin Kaepernick was hit out of bounds by Clay Matthews. The Green Bay linebacker drew a personal foul penalty, but so did 49ers tackle Joe Staley for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Because both penalties came after the play ended with Kaepernick stepping out of bounds without gaining a first down, it should have become fourth down.
However, game officials gave the 49ers another third-and-6 play, and they scored a touchdown on Kaepernick’s 10-yard pass to Anquan Boldin.
FAN FALLS TO HIS DEATH
A football fan fell from an elevated pedestrian walkway and died at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park during the 49ers-Green Bay Packers game.
San Francisco police spokesman Gordon Shyy said multiple people witnessed the man’s fall to a sidewalk from the Jamestown walkway, which goes around Candlestick.
According to police, witnesses said the man appeared intoxicated when he fell just after kickoff at about 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Off-duty medics and police officers gave him first aid until an ambulance arrived, but the man was declared dead from his injuries.
FANS OK AFTER RAIL BREAKS
Two fans appeared to have escaped serious injuries after a railing collapsed just after Sunday’s game ended in Indianapolis.
The unidentified fans were injured when the barrier they were leaning against gave way just above the tunnel leading to Oakland’s locker room. They fell hard onto the walkway. One fan was taken away on a stretcher, while another, witnesses said, left in a wheelchair.
