Guitarist brings a bit of Hollywood to Sumner in Thursday benefit concert

Tacoma News TribuneSeptember 18, 2013

Derik Nelson, a guitarist from the TV show "Glee,"  will play a pop/rock concert at the Sumner School District Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. Thursday Sept. 19.

The concert will help raise money for Sumner High School's arts and music programs.

Nelson attended high school in Thurston County before launching his career in Los Angeles. This concert is part of his Take Chances Tour, providing high schools along the West
Coast the opportunity to raise funds.

“My brother, sister, and I grew up in public school,” Nelson explains.  “We are passionate
about the arts, music, and about giving back and we see the budget cuts really affecting these schools. We wanted an out-of-the-box way for schools to fund-raise." He said the tour is a way to reach his fans and make a difference for arts education.

The Take Chances Tour is scheduled to reach at least 30 schools. Nelson and his team also provide a free masterclass assembly on careers in the arts for students at the school during the day.

Concert tickets to benefit Sumner School District are $15 and $20. They can be
purchased at the door or by calling the Sumner High School main office at 253-891-5500.
